good-looking, and with a future as a professional football player.
every guy at Stanton High School wishes he were Sam. That is, until
his championship football game, when Sam accidentally links with an
ancient source of energy known as the Veil and reveals his potential

community of sorcerers who utilize the Veil as a part of everyday
life. Once there, he trains beside a mute boy who speaks through
music, an eternal sage who's the eyes and ears of the Veil, and a
beautiful girl who's pretty sure Sam's an idiot. As it becomes clear
Sam's meant for power magic-the most feared and misunderstood form of
sorcery-people beyond Atlas Crown learn of his dangerous potential.
An exiled group of power sorcerers are eager to recruit Sam,

Characters:
Although
the story follows Sam. I dare you to read this book and not want to
mention the mute boy when describing this book to your friends,
Gilssandro has a horn
and can only communicate through music using the horn. Another
important role is Sam's mentor May. Very intuitive and there are a
lot of sessions between them that gets the story rolling and the
world building more solid.
Writing: A
very imaginative fantasy read. There are a lot of different creatures
and magic and the world of the veil is interesting. The pacing of the
novel was steady and worked well along with the events that occurred,
there was nothing that the reader is unable to follow easily. The
plot unravels and gives the reader just enough at the right time.
Story:
Although
there is a lot of magic and interesting creatures in this alien like
world, the story really focuses on Sam and the emotions he feels as
he experiences the different events. He has an variety emotions
doubts, temptations, mistakes, successes, impulsiveness, and anger.
Some are easier for him to over come than others, but it brings into
the story a heart. The struggles that he endures are very real and
were not easily overcome.
Originality I
think this story was completely original. This is my first venture
into a story where the main character has such a passion for
football. There is not a lot of the actual sport of football (the
usage here is of the American game and not soccer) but as Sam's main
focus in his life at this point was focusing on his future as a
football player, there are several references to that part of his
life throughout the story. The main focus is on the people of the
Veil and strengthening his magic, as he is the key to them
overpowering the sorcery people
Krista's Review
: It did take me a little bit
to warm up to the main character and the speed in which the events
happened in the beginning of this story. I think that the magical
creatures and the world, along with the main character's
unwillingness to concede to his position was unique. I found him
stubborn and he is so emotionally torn between what his future has in
store is so true to our human sides that it was hard not to
understand his position. He was in a mind set, ready to move on from
high school and go to college and play football, but it's all taken
away so suddenly and his introduction to Atlas Crown so grand and
fantastical that his indecisiveness is very expected and although was
hard to read about at times, is really something we would all do when
faced with such a dramatic change so fast.
